In Greek mythology, Parthenope is the mermaid who committed suicide after failing to charm Odysseus. Her body was carried by the flood to the place where Castel dell’Ovo now stands and therefore gave the name to the city which later became Neapolis (Naples).

In this film, Naples is to Sorrentino what Rome was to Fellini, portraying the capital as a synecdoche for national ideals and values, but also as a city of power and great cultural, social and political influence. Thanks to Parthenope, Italian cinema woke up from the lethargy of banality and commercialism.
